You will enjoy the convenience and power of FeatureFormat Professional as it automatically formats your screenplay, but Definitions it learns or customization you might do won't be permanent - as they are, on the full version. Everytime the program exits, which the sample version does every page and a half, all Definitions and Function changes are lost. No installation is needed. Just copy FeatureFormat Professional onto your working WordStar disk. Although any copy method works, FeatureFormat Professional has a built in Clone (Copy) program you might want to take advantage of: 1) Boot up on your working WordStar disk in the A drive. Put your FeatureFormat sample disk in the B drive. 2) From the A> Prompt type: (underlined) A>B:FF_FF.COM FeatureFormat Professional will respond with: Cloning FeatureFormat: ************************** If your computer has a hard disk, put your FeatureFormat Professional edition in the floppy drive. While logged onto the drive that has your WordStar on it, type the string given in Step 2 substituting "B:" with the drive designation of your floppy. For the program to work correctly, your WordStar should be named WS.COM. If it isn't, rename it: A>REN_WS.COM=othername.COM FeatureFormat Professional is being distributed as "Shareware". If, after using the program, you fell you will continue to use FeatureFormat Professional, we would request a user support fee of $20.00, in return for which we will mail you a full manual and keep you advised as to future updates of the program. All material supplied assumes a working knowledge of WordStar, which these instructions supplement - not replace. Let's get started! Copy FeatureFormat Professional onto your working WordStar disk. (Page 2). For machines with two disk drives, place your Feature Format/WordStar disk in Drive A and a disk to write to in Drive B. Type: FF B:SCRIPT If you have a hard disk or single drive machine, type FF while logged onto your WordStar/FeatureFormat drive. Assign your text file, (SCRIPT) to whatever drive you normally write to.) Included in this booklet is a colored Reference Page. This duplicates the colored Reference Card with one exception - the keys that FeatureFormat's s come assigned to at the factory are written in on the bottom of the page. (The Reference Card leaves them blank - in case you decide to change some). For now, use the keys listed on the bottom of the Reference Page. All_keys_needed_to_type_that_script_are_on_the_card. Because FeatureFormat does Carriage Returns, margin changes and line capitalization, you don't. s refer to any FeatureFormat Professional function keys. refers to function keys that change margins; they're the familiar screenplay things: , , , , and . You're going to type the training script on the Card. Read the first four lines on the Reference Page. Let's go! ______________ A WORKING TOUR ______________ The numbers to the left refer to the line numbers on the sample script. Check out the info before you type that line. Don't go back to correct typos. 0 Tell FeatureFormat what you want before you type it. You're going to type a Name, so hit . (Look on the bottom of the Reference Page; is the key. 1 Without shifting to uppercase or hitting any other key, type "vicamp". Capitalization is automatic. (Line 1 Continues) 1 (Continued )The space before the "(" is done for you. When you type "con't." it's automatically lower case, since "(" turns off capitalization. A indicates you're done with the Name Line. It sets margins to Dialog. 4 does a Carriage Return, changes margins and inserts your opening "(". 7 also does Carriage Returns. 10 Look at FeatureFormat's Status Line in the upper right corner of your screen. The "c" is lower-case. Watch the "c" change to "C" and "AUTO+" appear when you type . AUTO+ indicates that a capitalizing (in this case ) has turned AUTO-RECORD on; the first thing recorded is that . A Recording can be anything you prefer to "play back" rather than retype. 12 The "C" on the Status Line is now uppercase; forces the name to capital letters. After you type "rodell" turn Recording off with the +. What was recorded appears between the + Recording Fence, on your Card. Your Status Line has been replaced with "ASSIGN TO:". FeatureFormat wants to know what you wish to Assign your recording, RODELL to. You can choose between 1 and 4 letters or one number or symbol. We're going to assign "Rodell" to "R". Because the assignment can be up to four letters, and you only want a one letter Assignment, hit the after "R" to indicated you're done with the assignment. UPDATE has just appeared in your Status Line. It will keep reappearing to remind you that your recording hasn't been Updated (written to disk). We'll tell you later how this can be done automatically. Your cursor is back where it was before you made the Assignment - after RODELL. You're done with the Name Line, so hit to go into Dialog. 16 Check out the Status Line while you type the slug line. Again no need to shift to uppercase. AUTO+ has been turned on by the ; because you don't hit + to make an Assignment, nothing will be recorded. (Line 16 Continues) 16 (Continued) You're going to recall RODELL that you recorded on Line 12. It was assigned to "R". Space after "LIGHTNING" and type "R". In this instance, you know you're going to follow RODELL with Parenthetical, so type the now. 19 Neat, huh? Note that the after the Name Line also turned off capitalization. 22 The Status Line doesn't say "AUTO+" (for AUTO-RECORD) so you can use the manual . It works similiar to AUTO RECORD, except you tell it when to start and stop recording. Think of it as a tape recorder turned on and off with the same button. Turn it on by hitting . Everything typed will be recorded while the Status Line says RECORD. Type "Susan". Hit again to close the fence. The Status Line now asks us what we want "Susan" assigned to. Type "2". Since the Assignment is to a non-letter, and FeatureFormat regards all non-letters as potential function keys, there's no need to enter a to terminate the Assignment. Your cursor is back where it was before the Assignment. Finish your sentence with a period and go to . 24 When you type "2", "Susan" appears. 25 Deja vu. We want "RODELL" followed by Dialog. The "r" doesn't need a space before it this time because it is set apart by a non-letter - in this case a period. Since "r" equals RODELL, we follow it with a to get into Dialog. (The also recalls. You could have typed "r=" and a after "RODELL" appeared to get into Dialog. But, because the is built into all s, you save a keystroke.) 31 Vuja De - you've never been here before. Don't type the colon after the "CUT TO". It appears automatically when you follow it with a slug or . (If you had typed it, FeatureFormat would notice it, and not insert a second colon.) 37 We're recalling the Definition recorded in Line 31; the colon is inserted automatically. 42 Remember you Recorded "Susan". Since slugs capitalize automatically, it comes out "SUSAN". Take a break; the rest is candy. But, before turning off the computer, you'll want to save (write to disk) both the WordStar file and the Recordings (Definitions) you just did. This is something you'll probably want to do at the end of every writing session. Type Control-Up Arrow. (Don't forget to use the shift key). It will Update FeatureFormat and pass a Control-KX (Save File and Exit) to WordStar. ___________________ TIME TO FOOL AROUND ___________________ From CP/M, reload FeatureFormat Professional and the file you just created. (FF B:SCRIPT). Type Control-QC to get to the end of your file. ESCAPE_MEANS_ESCAPE Type "2". You will get "Susan". Now type "2". You will get 2. Try an before a . It will return whatever character is printed on the key. FeatureFormat's , as you have seen, does many things other than just a Carriage Return, such as changing margins after a Name Line. If you work with WordStar commands that require only a Carriage Return, like Search and Replace, precede it with an . Incidently, to feed WordStar an Escape, hit twice. EQUALS_IS_EQUALS Space and type "R" followed with . Think of it as "R = Rodell". WRITE_AND_REWRITE Watch the "WR" on your Status Line when you hit the . It will change to "RW". Hit it a few times. It's a toggle. When you're in the Rewrite (RW) type a few s. Only margins and capitalization change; no Carriage Returns are done. Go into Rewrite and change the margin to Dialog with the . Move your cursor to previously written dialog. Change some dialog. Hit the . The Status Line goes to WR. Go back to the end of your file. As you've seen, in the Write mode sets the margins for the Name Line and the next changes it to Dialog margins. In the Rewrite Mode, goes directly to dialog margins. Try it with , , ,. The first three also turn capitalization on. NUMBER/SYMBOL_TOGGLE The middle symbol on your Status Line is a 3. Type it. You get a 3! Hit the toggle. The "3" has changed to it's shifted counterpart, a "#". Hit the 3 again. You get a "#". Hit any of the other numbers. They're all reversed. So is the "?" and the "/". With the "#" showing in the Status Line, shift and hit the "2". You get "Susan". Don't be concerned about the for now. FUNCTION/DEFINITION_SCREENS Flip over your Reference Card. The last symbol on your Status Line (before RECORD, AUTO+ or UPDATE position) is your Key. Type it. Your Status Line says "1-FUNCS 2-DEFS". Type "1" Move your cursor around the Function Settings screen with your WordStar cursor keys. Read the Reference Card under "Function Settings". The Line with the numbers will only accept numbers. The Function key assignments will accept non-punctuation symbols, numbers or keyboard function keys. Try it. Put it back the way it was. The DEFAULT FILE is the script file FeatureFormat will load automatically if you just enter FF at the A> prompt. Exit the Function Screen with an . If you are using WordStar's Help Level 3 (all Help Menus displayed), when you come back from the Function or Definition screen, the space for the menu will be there, but the menu won't. Typing Control-JH3 (or better yet, Assigning it to a key(s)) will always bring it back; so will any command that calls a help menu. Type the again. Choose "2" for the Definition Screen. (We've saved the best for last). Check out the info on the Reference Card. Try a Protect and a Delete. An UPDATE writes your Definitions, Function changes and the position of the switch (among other things) to disk, making them permanent. If you don't Update, none of the changes will be there the next time you load FeatureFormat. You already know an Automatic Update occurs when you save your WordStar file with a Control-Up Arrow. If you wish, you can also Update without exiting WordStar, by doing a Control-U from either the Function or Definition screen. Exit this file. Write your script with FeatureFormat Professional. Win an Oscar. SAMPLE_REFERENCE_MANUAL This Sample Reference Manual consists of excerpts from the complete manual, which mostly elaborates on material covered in the TRAINING GUIDE. Go thru the the TRAINING GUIDE first; it is written to get you started. It also contains essential information not duplicated in this Sample Reference Manual. Numbers on the Reference Card refers to pages in this Sample Reference Manual. Line numbers refers to the Lines on your sample script on the blue card. RECORDING,_ASSIGNING_AND_RECALLING ______ RECORD ______ FeatureFormat Professional can record items used repeatedly like a Name, Slug line, WordStar commands, etc., while you write your screenplay and "play it back", inserting it in the proper places when needed. The + is the Record Key. It's like an ON/OFF button on a tape recorder. Hit it and is on. What gets recorded is refered to as a DEFINITION. On line 22 on your Reference Card "Susan" is a Definition. Hit + a second time, is OFF and you are asked what you want to Assign the Definition to. The Definition is always fenced between two +'s. ___________ AUTO RECORD ___________ AUTO+ on the Status Line means AUTO RECORD is on. It is turned on by any capitalizing : , , , and Line 10 on the sample script shows turning on AUTO RECORD. After "RODELL" is typed, is hit, an ASSIGNMENT is made and RODELL is stored. You can also think of AUTO+ as meaning the opening + to the Recording Fence is being inserted automatically. AUTO RECORD, unlike , turns itself off at the next or . If on Line 12 on the sample script was not hit, no Assignment would have been made, AUTO RECORD would have terminated itself and nothing would be stored. AUTO RECORD is inoperative in the Rewrite mode. __________ ASSIGNMENTS ___________ When you toggle OFF the Status Line will say: ASSIGN TO: An Assignment can be: 1) Any combination of 1 to 4 letters. If less than four letters, end the Assignment with a or Space. 2) Single numbers or symbols. 3) Keyboard Function Keys. You don't have to go thru mental contortions to keep your Definitions straight; Assign them abbreviations you can easily remember. You can't mix letters and non-letters, but you wouldn't want to, anyway; Bosnella Jackson is easier to remember as "BJ" than "B3". If you give an Assignment already in use, the Status Line will Beep and say: REASSIGN (y/n) (Y)es Deletes the previous Definition that used that Assignment and assigns it to the Definition you just wrote. (N)o allows you to choose another Assignment. ____________________________ RECALLING LETTER ASSIGNMENTS ____________________________ For letters to be recognized as an Assignment to be Recalled, it should be preceded by any or non-letter - (Space, period, etc.) (Lines 16 & 25 on your Sample Script). There are two ways to Recall letter Assignments. 1) Follow it with . 2) Follow it with any . is built into it. (Line 25 and 37 on your Sample Script). ___________________________________ RECALLING NUMBER/SYMBOL ASSIGNMENTS ___________________________________ Type it. ________________________ MISTAKES WHILE IN RECORD ________________________ If you make a mistake while recording use your DELETE or RUB-OUT key. It will cancel the previous character(s). If, by error, you do a word back (^A) followed by a word delete (^T) instead, when you play back the Definition, the word will write itself out, then delete itself. The first time can be fun to watch. The third or fourth time can get annoying. _____________________ RECORD OVERFLOW ERROR _____________________ If your computer BEEPS with every key rather than display them on the screen and the Status Line says RECORD, you have inadvertently turned on , forgot it was on, and exceeded it's capacity for a single Definition. If that's the case, check the next section - CANCELLING RECORD. ________________ CANCELLING RECORD _________________ There are three ways to cancel : 1) If nothing has been typed after the opening <+>, hit the <+> again. 2) Hit during the Assignment. 3) Make a blank Assignment. _____________________________ NESTING IS NOT JUST FOR BIRDS _____________________________ FeatureFormat Professional has the unique capability of letting one Definition call another Definition, which can call another. This can happen up to 10 levels, but let's not get ridiculous. It should be done whenever possible. Definitions stored this way take up less room, hence FeatureFormat Professional will always run at maximum speed. It is also a much faster and convenient way to write Definitions. Auto-Record does it automatically, by nesting the before the characters you type. THE_SCREENS ENTRY INTO THE SCREENS is accomplished with the At the Status Line prompt, 1 will take you to the FUNCTION SCREEN and 2 the DEFINI TION SCREEN. THE_FUNCTION_SCREEN ___________ MODIFICATION ____________ Only numbers will be accepted in the Margin Row. assignments will only accept non-letters, Keyboard or Configured Function Keys. Control Characters will not be accepted. If more than one is assigned to the same key, only one of the s will work. The others will be turned off. _________________________ AUTOMATIC NAME CENTERING _________________________ Set the NAME to the same setting as the Left Margin of DIALOG: NAME DIALOG 11 11 47 This will result in the the NAME LINE being automatically centered when the is hit to go into Dialog. THE_DEFINITION_SCREEN ________________________________________________________ PROTECTED DEFINITIONS -vs- THE AWESOME NEVERMORE COMMAND ________________________________________________________ Definitions are PROTECTED by a doing a ^P with the cursor on the line of the desired Definition. It's a toggle. Doing a ^P again removes the PROTECT status. "Protected" status should be reserved for homegrown Definitions, which aren't specific to one screenplay (CUT TO, WordStar functions, etc.). After this screenplay wins you fame and fortune you're going to write another one with FeatureFormat Professional. You might be working on two concurrently. Your Name and Slug Definitions, specific to one screenplay, you want cleared out, so you can start fresh. The Protect Status tells FeatureFormat Professional which Definitions you want saved when you start another screenplay with a CLONE & CLEAN. Unprotected Definitions can be cleared out in one swoop two different ways: 1) ^N - The Awesome Nevermore Command. 2) When FeatureFormat Professional is Cloned to itself or another file. In addition, FeatureFormat Professional will not make an Assignment with the to an Assignment of a Protected Definition. Instead of: REASSIGN (y/n) the message will be: KEY/S PROTECTED DELETE will not delete a Protected Definition. PAGINATION FeatureFormat Professional contains a semi-automatic screenplay paginator and de-paginator. You decide the best places to break the page; ________________________ ACTIVATING THE PAGINATOR ________________________ Pagination and De-pagination consists of multiple character and line insertions and deletes, something the kindly Muse of Format knew you wouldn't want to happen to your screenplay by accident. You might also wish to free some of your potential keyboard function keys by turning off Pagination until you're done writing your screenplay. FeatureFormat Professional allows you to do this. FeatureFormat Professional comes with the keys, as displayed on the Function Screen, assigned to an untypeable key. ENHANCEMENTS _________________________ TURNING FEATUREFORMAT OFF ________________________ As unthinkable as it may seem, there are some times when you'd like to put FeatureFormat on hold - such as exiting to WordStar's main menu to print, or editing another file with the intention of coming back to your screenplay. Control \ will turn off FeatureFormat with one beep for confirmation. Hit again to turn it on - two beeps. ADVANCED FEATUREFORMAT FOR THE CONNOISSER ...everything has to be somewhere - MORE_USES_FOR_NESTING _______________________ NESTED CHARACTER NAMES _______________________ In screenplays, as in Hollywood, the name you start with is not always the one you finish with. When a name change occurs, Nesting allows one Definition change to revise all other occurences. Here's how. Call your main character "Sarah". Record it with Manual Record as "Sarah". (Capitalization is always automatic.) Assign it to "S". When you write Defi nitions using that name, as in "SARAH", "SARAH'S HOUSE" or "SARAH EXITS", recall "Sarah" with S<=>, within the Definition being recorded. For example: S<=>'S HOUSE. will come out > INT. SARAH'S HOUSE. Halfway thru you realize "Sarah" is a bad name for your male lead. Instead of changing all Definitions containing "Sarah", you only have to change one - "Sarah". Assign your new name to "S". Now: S<=>'S HOUSE. will come out > INT. SLY'S HOUSE. all other nested S<=> will also be changed. _______________________________________________ USING FEATUREFORMAT FOR GENERAL WORD PROCESSING _______________________________________________ Some things are just too good to be without. You can use FeatureFormat Professional straight from the bag for general word processing with WordStar, but you'll find it even more useful when you turn off the screenwriting s, thus freeing up keys you might need for other applications. To do this, Clone yourself a fresh copy, go to the Function Screen and assign all the s to the same key. If you hit that key, one of the s will be on, the rest are turned off. Or, you might assign them all to a "Ghost" key (24). That way you won't have a single key tied up. indicate FeatureFormat Professional Function Keys.
