ToColumn version 1.00 for CP/M-compatible systems ToColumn is a program which converts single-column docu ments to multi-column documents which can then be printed as usual by WordStar, NewWord, or NewPrint. To use ToColumn, follow these steps: 1.First make sure ToColumn is installed properly. While it does not need to be installed for your terminal or printer, it may need to be installed for your word processor if you have changed WordStar or NewWord's standard line height (8/48"), top (3 lines) or bottom (8 lines) margin, or page length (66 lines). You may also want to change ToColumn's default number of columns (2), column width (30), or margin between columns (5). Also, if you are using WordStar with a dot- matrix printer, you will probably need to install ToColumn to use hard carriage returns in the multi-column output file to avoid confusing WordStar when printing the file. Run the TCINSTAL program to install ToColumn. 2.Test out your installa tion and your word processor by converting one of the included test documents and printing the resulting output file. For example, for the first test document, type the following: TC TCTEST1.DOC TCTEST1.TWO ToColumn will read in TCTEST1.DOC, convert the text to columns, and create TCTEST1.TWO in the process. Now print TCTEST1.TWO just as you would any document. 3.To use ToColumn with one of your own documents, first reformat the entire document to the desired column width. If the default column width of 30 characters is satisfactory, reformat the document using a right margin of 30. Leave the left margin set to 1. That's all that is necessary. After saving the reformatted docu ment, it is ready to be con verted to columns by ToColumn. If you want a different column width, or a different number of columns, or if you want to change the margin between columns, you must not only reformat the document but also use some of the special dot commands. Run TCINSTAL to see a summary of these special dot commands. Note that WordStar and NewWord will simply ignore these commands. Only ToColumn uses them for anything. Note that ToColumn never changes the original document. 4.At any time you can get a brief summary of how to use ToColumn by running it as follows: TC ?
