Use of Diablo Italics Print Wheel on 630/ECS printer. A. Text preparation: 1. The text to be printed should be prepared for verbatim formatting only. 2. Italics must be on a line by line basis. That is, the italics must be shut off by the end of the line, and then restarted on the next line if the italics treatment is to continue. 3. Even if an end-of-italics command is given by the end of the line, if that command is the very last character on the line the following additional step must be taken. Follow the cut-off command with a ` or some other innocuous character that can be whited out on the hard copy. [Should you fail to do this, the carriage return, line feed characters will not be recognized and the printer will continue printing the next line off the page and across the platen.] 4. Superscripted footnotes are problematic, use only in-line footnote numbers when using automatic footnoting. And any italics in the footnote will have to be planned carefully so as to end up on a single line at the bottom of the page--and even then may not work. 5. Double line underlining is provided by the \ (backslash) char. EXAMPLE: @begin(verbatim) Inner-city youth can no longer expect to find unskilled jobs in basic manufacturing but @i[must] be prepared to compete for service and other jobs that assume basic competency in reading, writing, and math as well as fundamental office skills. (See Mayors Office of Employment Training, @i[Job Requirements for the 1980s: A Chicago] ` @i[Assessment.] (Chicago: City Council, 1983).) The last two lines illustrate how italics must be line by line and how italics to the end of the line must be further shut off with a dummy character--here a `. @end[verbatim] B. Setting up the printer 1. If there is any problem along the way, it is best to turn the printer off at the rear and start over. If the printer is turned off for any reason--such as to keep it from running off the page--then step 3 must be repeated. 2. Install the italics print wheel and flip the first slide switch under the hood up--the ECS switch. 3. Send the italics [formerly italics.out] file to the printer by one of the following means--if pluperfect, "type italics l"; if zcpr, "list italics"; if garden variety cpm, "control-p type italics control-p" -- then carriage return for any of these commands. The printer should respond with a slight carriage movement after a moment's pause, but should not print anything.
