GEM(R)/3 Release 3.01 README.DOC File April 1988 This file is divided into the following sections: * GEM 3.01 installation and the GEM Setup program * GEM(R) applications, which include the GEM(R)/3 Desktop(TM) * Font issues * Application-specific font limitations * Hardware considerations If you're using an HP(R) LaserJet(R) with HP soft fonts and running Ventura Publisher(R) under GEM 3.01, read the GEM 3.01 Release Note to learn how to set up and use them on your system. INSTALLATION AND GEM SETUP * Before running GEM Setup and installing fonts on your system, add the following lines to the file called CONFIG.SYS in your root directory. Use your word processor in non-document (ASCII) mode: FILES = 20 BUFFERS = 15 If you don't have a CONFIG.SYS file, consult your operating system documentation for an explanation of how to create one. * If you are upgrading to GEM 3.01 from GEM 2.X and if you have a serial printer attached to your computer, use your word processor (in ASCII mode) to remove the following line from the CONFIG.SYS file: DEVICE = GEMPRINT.SYS CONFIG.SYS is located in the root directory of your hard disk or, if you have the GEM system on floppy disks, of the GEM STARTUP disk. Do not otherwise alter CONFIG.SYS, excepted as noted previously under "Installation and GEM Setup." You can delete the file GEMPRINT.SYS from the hard disk. * Removing a device with GEM Setup deletes the native GEM bit- mapped fonts associated with that device from the FONTS folder. To preserve fonts, copy them from the FONTS folder onto floppy disk. Then copy them back after changing your device setup. * If you are using Ventura Publisher(R) drivers with GEM 3.01, back up your Ventura drivers in the GEMSYS folder (file names are PD_*.SYS) onto floppy disk before you run GEM Setup. Then copy them back from the floppy disk to their origin. * If you are using more than one driver pack disk to add or change devices, run a separate GEM Setup session for each driver pack disk. * On a floppy disk system, if you're using GEM Setup to change the screen or mouse in your current setup, insert the GEM DESKTOP disk in drive A and the GEM STARTUP disk in drive B before choosing "CHANGE EXISTING CONFIGURATION" in GEM Setup. * The SYSTEM MASTER DISK includes a file named DESKTOP.CPM; this file allows you to use GEM software with the Concurrent and DOS Plus operating systems. Follow these steps to prepare the GEM 3.01 SYSTEM MASTER DISK for use with Concurrent or DOS Plus BEFORE you run GEM Setup: 1. From the operating system command line, use a track-to-track copy utility, such as DISKCOPY, to duplicate the GEM SYSTEM MASTER DISK. 2. Insert the duplicate into drive A and type: DEL A:DESKTOP.INF 3. Rename the .CPM file by typing: REN A:DESKTOP.CPM A:DESKTOP.INF 4. Now run GEM Setup to install GEM 3.01. Use the duplicate GEM/3 Release 3.01 SYSTEM MASTER DISK to run GEM Setup. Refer to the GEM/3 Desktop Installation Guide. The renamed .INF file tells the GEM Desktop that .CMD files are command files. * If, after installing the GEM/3 system software, you start GEM Output and find that you are returned immediately to the GEM Desktop, you may remove the GEMBOOT, GEMDESK, and GEMSYS folders from the root directory of your hard disk. Do NOT remove the GEMAPPS folder. (See p. 1-6 of the GEM/3 Desktop Installation Guide.) * If you have installed extra fonts under GEM 2 you should read page 1-6 of the GEM/3 Desktop Installation Guide before deleting GEMSYS. In addition to the information there, note that you will have to rename the fonts after copying them into \GEMAPPS\FONTS before they can be used under GEM/3. The font file naming convention is explained in the Fontware Installation Guide. The only essential is that the filename extension should be the correct one for the device. * If you use GEM Setup to change your configuration, you should delete GEM Output's file OUTPUT.INF because it may reflect the old config- uration. You will find this file in the \GEMAPPS folders of your hard disk (if you have one) and your GEM Desktop working disk(s). GEM APPLICATIONS GEM Desktop ----------- * The GEM Desktop Format command does not return error messages or status information. To see error messages and the disk's status, use one of the alternate formatting methods described below. If the GEM Desktop Format command has no effect at all, as is the case with Concurrent DOS(TM), use one of the alternate formatting methods. Alternate formatting methods - you can also format floppy disks by: - double-clicking on the icon for the format command file; when the OPEN APPLICATION dialog appears, type the drive identifier (for example, "A:" the colon is required) in the "Parameters" field - choosing "Enter DOS Commands" from the File Menu; this allows you to format from the DOS command line GEM Output ---------- * The final form feed option in the Page Preferences Menu is inoperative in GEM 3.01. Output does not eject a blank page after printing files. * If you've installed Ventura for use with GEM, when using GEM Output, always choose the GEM output device icon and not the Ventura device icon, which contains a resolution (DPI) value. Refer to the GEM 3.01 Release Note for information about using Ventura drivers with GEM 3.01. GEM WordChart ------------- * GEM WordChart running on a screen with resolution greater than or equal to 640 X 480 results in reduced window size. FONT ISSUES General ------- * To use the standard or "native" font set generated by GEM Setup, your system must have a minimum of 512K RAM. 640K RAM is recommended to make additional fonts with Fontware. If your system has insufficient memory, you may encounter problems when generating fonts and printing documents that contain multiple fonts or large point sizes. * Whenever adding or deleting fonts on your system, delete the files with the .INF extension from your FONTS folder. The GEM system software generates new .INF files for all your fonts automatically. PostScript(R) Fonts ------------------- * To specify a character in the PostScript Symbol font that has a decimal value of 129 or greater, add 31 to the value. For example, if your ASCII/Decimal chart indicates 130, enter 161. HP Soft Fonts ------------- * When using Ventura Publisher's HP driver with GEM 3.01, all soft fonts generated with Fontware for use in Ventura must be contained in the \GEMAPPS\GEMSYS and \GEMAPPS\FONTS subdirectories. * If your HP LaserJet II issues Error code 20 (Out of memory), your document may contain too many fonts. Reduce the number of fonts in the document by one font and reprint. Repeat this procedure until printing is successful. APPLICATION-SPECIFIC FONT LIMITATIONS * With the exception of GEM(R) First Word Plus(TM), GEM applications do not support fonts from Hewlett-Packard font cartridges. * GEM Draw Plus (Release 2.0), as initially installed, allows you to use true screen font sizes 7, 10, 14, and 36 points, and "doubled" screen font sizes of 20, 28, and 72 points. After the initial installation of GEM Draw Plus, you can use Fontware to create true point sizes for screen fonts that were first used as doubles; the true point sizes are of higher quality. Since no doubling occurs for printers, you must generate true 72-point printer fonts. As its Type Menu shows, GEM Draw Plus makes a maximum of four typefaces available at a time. * GEM Graph and GEM Graph MapEditor do not support 7-point type or more than two typefaces, but are otherwise the same as GEM Draw Plus. * GEM(R) WordChart(TM) accepts up to six point sizes and a maximum of four typefaces; all typefaces must have IDENTICAL sizes. * GEM(R) Paint(TM) (Release 2.1 and earlier) supports up to twelve different point sizes for all typefaces combined. If you create more than twelve point sizes, unexpected results can occur, including corruption of the Style Menu. * GEM Desktop Publisher allows eight typefaces to be used at a time. Refer to your GEM Desktop Publisher Font Merge User's Guide for further information on using fonts with Publisher. HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS Printers -------- * If your system freezes when printing a text file, reboot the computer and check your hard disk free space. If it contains less free space than that used by the fonts you are trying to print, there is insufficient space to load your fonts. Free up the needed amount of space (at least equal to the size of your font files). * Toshiba printers need to be placed into unidirectional mode for printing graphics under GEM 3.01, for example, in GEM Draw Plus. Otherwise, problems such as jagged vertical lines occur. The adjustment procedure differs for different models. Consult the documentation supplied with your printer. You may elect to leave the printer in bidirectional mode when working only with text for example, in First Word Plus. Printing is faster in bidirectional mode, and differences in print quality are almost imperceptible when printing text only. * Serial printers require that the DOS MODE command be used. Using a word processor in ASCII mode, add the following command to your GEM.BAT or AUTOEXEC.BAT file: MODE COMn:9600,N,8,1 where n is the number of the port that the printer is connected to. Refer to your operating system documentation for further information about the MODE command. END OF README.DOC -----------------
