FIG = FOG Index Generator Version 1.5 PURPOSE: FIG analyzes text files and generates readability statistics. One of these stats is a FOG index. This is roughly the reading level needed to understand the text. For example, a FOG index of 8 means the text should be understandable to an 8th grader. FIG can also give suggestions to make the text more readable. It may not make you a better writer, but it may help simplify your writing. When writing for the general public, aim for a FOG index of 8 to 10. If it's much higher, the writing may seem overbearing. Much lower, and it may seem choppy. This file has a FOG index of 8. HOW TO USE IT: At your A> prompt, enter FIG filename.typ /options where "filename.typ" is the name of the file you want to check, and "/options" can be /E or /S or both. FIG normally only reads the first 16K of a document. To read an entire text file (takes a little longer), use the /E option. FIG normally only gives a FOG index and some simple information about a file. To have FIG give suggestions on how to improve/simplify the text, use the /S option. Realize that FIG only analyzes some of the mechanics of writing; it doesn't understand context. It may not be reliable on technical writing or material with a specialized vocabulary. Also, it may not give accurate results on files with unusual punctuation or formatting. CLOSING COMMENTS: This program is public domain, and many people have contributed to it.
