HARDSOFT.DOC This is a dandy little utility for converting text files containing "Hard" carriage returns into files containing "soft" carriage returns such as those provided by WordStar. It also converts WordStar type documents into those containing only "Hard" carriage returns. If you've ever tried to reformat text files drawn from any of the commercial data bases using the ^B function of WordStar, then you know why such conversion is necessary. In addition, Hardsoft will also convert WordStar files into copy suitable uploading to MCI Mail and other electronic mail services. To change from WordStar to ASCII : HARDSOFT FILENAME.TYP <- Press Return To change from ASCII to WordStar : HARDSOFT FILENAME.TYP S <- Press Return HardSoft always creates a new file. If you are "Softening" a file (ASCII > WordStar), it makes it a "SFT" type. "Hardened" files get an "HRD" type. This program is much faster than others which performing similar functions. Its only limitation is Memory -- It won't handle files larger than about 48k at a time. If you must process larger files, I suggest BACKTOWS for "Softening" and FILTW for "Hardening". I wrote this Doc file because there was none. My thanks to Ben Cardozo for his notes on using HardSoft from which I compiled this document. D. Brown 3/23/85
